Design without borders – Reflections

Vienna Design Week
Polnisches Institut Wien
27.9.–5.10.2025

You are cordially invited to the exhibition Design without borders – Reflections, which will be presented as part of the Vienna Design Week. The Polish Institute Vienna presents an excerpt from the exhibition Design without borders, which has been held annually in Budapest since 2004. On display are works of art by 34 Austrian, Polish, Romanian, Slovakian, Slovenian, Czech and Hungarian textile and jewelry designers, all responding to the works of contemporary composers.

Each participating country has formed its own creative trio – a composer, a textile artist and a jewelry designer. The music became both the starting point and the inspiration for new artistic works. Our starting point was the composition Among the Clouds by Helena Vidic Lesjak. This resulted in the textile interpretation Botanical Geography, accompanied by pieces of jewelry by designer Sandra Kocjančič.

The Oloop pattern Botanical Geography features prints of city park flowers — symbols of fragility, resilience and quiet beauty — and reflects the gentle emotional landscape evoked by the music of Vidic Lesjak. Among the Clouds resonates with the same sensitivity and poetic quality that characterises our textile work. Just as her composition floats between grounded melody and airiness, our project captures ephemeral natural forms in lasting textile impressions. This dialog between sound and material aims to create a sensory, meditative experience that honours the connection between music, nature and craft. Through this collaboration, we celebrate a shared artistic language rooted in attentiveness and care.

The pattern was created using the Hapa Zome printing process, a traditional Japanese technique for printing flowers. In this ancient method, the natural pigments and shapes of botanical materials are transferred directly onto the fabric by gentle hammering or pressing.
