I AM NOT ALONE
I AM NOT ALONE

Encountering the creative work of immigrant women can be understood as an intimate yet public act, where they share a piece of themselves with us and invite us to do the same. The embroidered and graphic works were created in the process of empowerment, building resilience, a sense of connection and belonging. The short film is testimony to their strength, courage and creativity.

As part of the project Active Relations II, the Oloop Collective has worked with migrant women who come from different parts of the world – Iraq, Iran, Syria, Morocco, Turkey, Kosovo, Northern Macedonia, Bosnia and others. Exclusion, loneliness and isolation are a reality for many migrant women as they do not speak the language, do not have a supportive circle of friends and extended family and face difficulties due to cultural and social changes. Through creative and other invigorating activities, migrant women can reconnect with themselves and others. In this way, they strengthen their mental well-being, resilience, sense of connection and belonging, and inner peace. Creativity also provides a space for reflection – about oneself, the world and others. Presenting their work publicly is a step forward. It is a healing step when their work is publicly displayed and their stories are heard. For an audience that has no contact with immigration, isolation and loneliness in their everyday lives, the exhibition offers a better and more empathetic understanding.

The symbolic content that characterizes the exhibition is carried by an embroidered self-portrait. By making their own portrait, the participants tell a story about themselves. The colors used for the self-portrait symbolize the virtues of the author. Making the portrait helps to increase self-confidence and personal growth in general. Creating a self-portrait is both an intimate event and a collaborative work of art. From a sense of loneliness and separation, the artist develops a sense of connection and belonging that helps her realize that she is “not alone.”

In the short film I Am Not Alone, we see the moving and inspiring story of Azadeh Hashemzadeh, an Iranian artist. The film is a production of TENT Film directed by Ciril Jazbec, cinematographer Sašo Štih and editor Angelo Raaijmakers.
